In case you missed it, I’m moving into a new apartment on Saturday and…it’s a lot! So I’m giving myself a break and not worrying about exercising every day, not worrying about answering calls or texts in a timely manner, and not worrying about writing this newsletter. So in lieu of the usual, here are three things that have brought me zen in a week full of chaos:
I’ve been listening to podcasts on repeat as I pack, and my favorite has been “Sentimental in the City,” a mini-series by Catherine O'Donoghue and Dolly Alderton about Sex and the City. Each episode, the two break down a season of Sex and the City, and they treat it like a Ph.D. dissertation. In one episode, they actually got me fully on board with the idea that you can read Sex in the City through a similar lens to Pride and Prejudice — and I believe it! They’ve convinced me! They also happen to be hilarious, which helps the existential dread that comes with moving in New York.
In an effort to physically feel like I’m wearing sweatpants all day without emotionally feeling like I’m wearing sweatpants all day, I have been pretty much living in this Brooklinen jumpsuit. It’s very soft, and very cozy, and looks cute with a t-shirt layered under it. And when I need to leave the apartment, I can wander out without someone saying, “What’s with the girl in the Golden Girls housecoat?!”
A few times over the past week, I’ve taken a bike ride at about 6:30 AM down to the Brooklyn Heights promenade. (I like to ride by the house from Moonstruck where Cher lived.) On my way down, I’ve stopped by my new place to drop off a few things. And every time I’ve gone, the second I’ve walked into the apartment, I’ve felt instantly content. I’m usually someone who second-guesses every single definitive decision I make, so this is a new sensation for me. But I think it points to a positive next step. And that feels good.
See you on the other side!
